BIS cautious on stablecoins: significant risks remain for mass payments
The Bank for International Settlements (BIS), often described as the bank for central banks, has taken a cautious position on the future of stablecoins in everyday payments. General Manager Pablo Hernández de Cos said that despite the growing use of these instruments, concerns remain around financial stability, interoperability, anti-money-laundering controls, and monetary sovereignty.
Why it matters
Stablecoins are increasingly present in digital payments and the crypto sector, but the BIS position shows that monetary institutions continue to distinguish between technological innovation and systemic reliability. The BIS views tokenized bank deposits more favorably—digital forms of commercial-bank money integrated with blockchain—because they could modernize payments without creating a parallel and fragmented monetary system.
For anyone following the sector, the key question is not which technology will win. It is how regulators, central banks, and private operators are trying to balance speed, innovation, and security.
