A blockchain can be thought of as a shared digital ledger. Instead of being held by a single organization, synchronized copies exist across many computers in the network.

What is a block?

Transactions are grouped into blocks. Each block contains information linking it to the previous one, creating a chronological chain that is difficult to alter retroactively without the network noticing.

Why it matters

This mechanism allows people who do not know one another to agree on the state of a digital ledger without relying on a single central party. It is one reason blockchain became the technological foundation for many cryptocurrencies.

Understanding blockchain does not require becoming a programmer. A few core concepts are enough to make the rest much more intuitive.
