Kraken parent Payward agrees to acquire European bank Saldo

Payward, the parent company of crypto exchange Kraken, has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Saldo Finance Oy, the Finnish holding company that controls Lithuania-licensed Saldo Bank UAB. The announcement was made on October 14, 2026.

The purchase price was not disclosed, and the transaction remains subject to customary closing conditions and regulatory approvals. Payward said it expects the deal to close in 2027.

According to the company, Saldo Bank has operating passport rights across five European markets and already offers deposits, consumer credit and business financing. After completion and the necessary approvals, the infrastructure could support services such as interest-bearing deposits, lending, cards, SEPA payments and banking-as-a-service.

The broader significance is the convergence between crypto platforms and regulated banking services. For Payward, a European banking license could create a foundation for integrating traditional liquidity, digital assets and credit within one infrastructure.

It is important to separate the announced agreement from services that are actually available today: the acquisition has not closed and does not mean new banking products are already accessible to Kraken customers.
