Zano rolls back about a month after inflation bug: what we know

Sep 28
2 min read

On Sunday, September 27, Zano said it had restarted its blockchain from block 3,833,000, before Hard Fork 6, after identifying an inflation bug linked to Gateway Addresses. According to the team, the vulnerability could have allowed unauthorized issuance of both ZANO and fUSD.

The rollback removes roughly one month of history from the recovered chain. Nodes, miners, stakers, and services need to adopt the update for the network to converge on the corrected version. Transactions confirmed during the affected period are therefore absent from the new chain.

Zano says ordinary wallet spending keys and transaction privacy were not compromised, and that its core consensus protocol was not breached. These are the project's claims; independent technical review and monitoring of the network's stability are still needed.

Freedom Dollar, the issuer of fUSD, has temporarily suspended economic activity involving the token. It said assets worth several million dollars may have been exchanged for counterfeit fUSD and indicated that it intends to absorb the losses. A final accounting of the incident is not yet available.

Why it matters: a rollback on this scale is an exceptional step. It can halt the effects of unauthorized issuance on the recovered chain, but it also removes legitimate transactions and cannot automatically reverse payments already settled on external networks. The case raises questions about transaction finality, emergency governance, and interoperability risks.

Next to watch: adoption of the update by network operators, the stability of the restarted chain, an accounting of exposures, and any full technical incident analysis.
